(Edwyn Collins/Freddie Scott/The Pooh Sticks/The Lullabyes/Best Coast/The Premiers/The X-Cellents/Jens Lekman/The Knight Brothers/The Gentle Waves/Bang Gang/Jonathan Richman/The Blue Notes/Tender Trap/Wanda Jackson) HDIF Podcast #5 - 18/8/10 Listen here - http://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/hdif-podcast-5/ The fifth podcast. . We open and close with the curators, Belle & Sebastian (a bonus track from their new album, and then a live song from their set at the original Bowlie festival in 1999), and then take a meander through the best of the rest. Some new songs, some old songs, some you'll know inside out, others you may not have heard before, part primer, part mix to do your hair to on the night before you leave. Hope you enjoy it! (Belle & Sebastian/Best Coast/The New Pornographers/The Phenomenal Handclap Band/Camera Obscura/Edwyn Collins/Jenny And Johnny/The Zombies/Laetitia Sadier/Those Dancing Days/Teenage Fanclub/The Go! on a CD given away at the How Does It Feel To Be Loved? club night in
December 2009. C87 Podcast - 12/1/11 For this one, I've compiled C87 - my idea of the follow up to C86,
released a year later in 1987, the year I moved to London. Some brand new songs from Comet Gain, The Primitives, Crystal Stilts, The Lovely Eggs and Owl + Mouse. Some songs that I played at the recent HDIF night in central London. And some songs that I plan to play on Friday night's HDIF in Brixton. All-music, no-chat. Brand new songs from Standard Fare, Bearsuit, Help Stamp Out Loneliness, Blood Oranges, The Heroes Of The Mexican Independence Movement, Ringo Deathstarr and Bear Response Team. A couple of overlooked indiepop classics from back in the day. Plus some northern soul and r&b stompers played at recent HDIFs and at Great Big Kiss. One song in Italian! All music, no chat. (Standard Fare/Little Willie John/Bear Response Team/Lavern Baker/Voxtrot/The Soulettes/Ringo Deathstarr/Soul Set/Help Stamp Out Loneliness/The Delicates/Heroes Of The Mexican Independence Movement/Chubby Checker/Throw That Beat In The Garbagecan!/Rita Pavone/Blood Oranges/James Brown/Bearsuit/Bettye Lavette) HDIF Podcast #10 - 30/3/11 On May 15 2003, Matt and Clare of Sarah Records DJed at HDIF at the Buffalo Bar. I asked them to play their pick of the Sarah releases and this is what they selected. Heavenly - C Is The Heavenly Option Great Big Kiss Podcast #4 - 6/4/11 (Barbara Jean English/Jimmy James & The Vagabonds/Mitty Collier/Stevie Wonder/Maggie Thrett/The Daylighters/Sinner Strong/Garnett Mimms/Mary McCarthy/Howard Tate/Connie Clarke/The Blendells/Lavern Baker/Ray Charles/The Starlets/Lee Charles/Peggy Lee/Darrell Banks/Shirley Ellis) HDIF Podcast #11 - 18/5/11 Listen here - http://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/hdif-podcast-11/ The usual mixture of new and old, indiepop and soul. Still no talking. Brand new songs from Herman Dune, The Wave Pictures, Comet Gain, The Middle Ones, Hong Kong In The 60s, Soda Shop and Omi Palone. A handful of C86-era favourites from The Dentists, The Corn Dollies and the Mary Chain. Plus some sublime northern soul, handclapping 60s pop, the birth of rock'n'roll, and a spectacularly funky reinvention of "Maggie May". Great Big Kiss Podcast #5 - 3/6/11 Listen here - http://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/great-big-kiss-podcast-5/ At the start of this week, I won a job lot of fifty northern and 60s soul records on ebay. Some super famous songs, some northern soul classics, some 70s funk cuts, a handful of northern instrumentals and a bunch of songs that I'd been after for ages. This is a collection of 17 of those singles - mostly A-sides, but a few choice B-sides too. The Songs The Sonics Taught Us - 13/6/11 Listen here - http://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/songs-the-sonics-taught-us/ Released in 1965, The Sonics' debut album, "Here Are The Sonics", contained four originals and eight covers, mostly famous soul and rhythm'n'blues tracks, with a song by local heroes The Wailers thrown in for good measure. But if the source material was well known, the overhaul these songs were given was something else entirely. Recorded on a two track tape recorder, with a single microphone to pick up the drum kit, the songs were souped up and supercharged: rough proto-punk bursts of energy that sounded like they were splattered with oil and gasoline. Here's the songs The Sonics taught us... Pulp Alternative Top Ten- 30/6/11 Listen here - http://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/pulp-alternative-top-ten/ As this is the weekend that Pulp make their live return, playing Hyde Park on Sunday, we'll be playing Pulp's Alternative Top Top at HDIF in Brixton on Friday - that is, the cooler songs by Pulp that hardly ever get played out. So no "Common People", no "Babies", but songs like "O.U." and "My Legendary Girlfriend". Votes for the Top Ten have been flying in thick and fast on Facebook. This is a podcast of some of the vote. Great Big Kiss Podcast #6 - 6/7/11 Listen here - http://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/great-big-kiss-podcast-6/ We start and end this Great Big Kiss podcast with two songs that share the same backing track. Laura Greene's "Music, Moonlight And You" is probably the better known of the two, but my favourite - mostly for the way the melodramatic spoken intro sets up the song - is Frankie And The Classicals' "What Shall I Do?". Elsewhere, we have my favourite ever northern soul single - "Do It" by Pat Powdrill - and "Luci Baines" by The American Four, who were fronted by a youthful, pre-Love, Arthur Lee (in fact, this song was his debut vocal recording). Plus the usual mix of northern soul, girl groups and rock'n'roll. HDIF Podcast #12 - 17/8/11 Listen here - http://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/hdif-podcast-12/ Loads of amazing new music in this one, with brand new tracks from Allo Darlin', This Many Boyfriends, Jens Lekman, White Town, Pocketbooks, Haiku Salut, Veronica Falls and more, plus the usual mixture of northern soul, girl groups and rock'n'roll. Great Big Kiss Podcast #7 - 7/9/11 Great Big Kiss Podcast #8 - 12/10/11 HDIF Podcast #13 - 16/1/12 Listen here - http://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/hdif-podcast-13/ A bumper crop of fantastic new music on this podcast. There's brand new, as yet unreleased, songs by Allo Darlin', The Wave Pictures, Tunabunny, Shrag, Tigercats, Cats On Fire and Evans The Death, and the glorious new single by The Magnetic Fields - plus the usual mixture of northern soul, girl groups and rock'n'roll. HDIF Podcast #14 - 16/2/12 Listen here - http://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/hdif-podcast-14/ After a few podcasts packed with new music, we decided to go cover version crazy for this latest episode. If you've ever wanted to hear Hefner playing ska, The Aislers Set throwing a party to a classic Phil Spector production, The Supremes and Chubby Checker taking on the Beatles, and a german beat pop version of a heavy metal classic (oh yes!), then we might just be able to help. . HDIF Podcast #15 - 13/3/12 Listen here - http://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/hdif-podcast-15/ Another bumper crop of brand new music on this podcast. There's new singles from Veronica Falls and The School, new album tracks from Dexys, The Wedding Present, Cats On Fire and The Just Joans, and brand new songs from the brand new likes of Big Wave, Knickers and Orca Team. Plus the usual foot-stomping mixture of northern soul, girl groups and rock'n'roll. Great Big Kiss Podcast #9 - 10/5/12 Listen here - http://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/great-big-kiss-podcast-9/ Still buzzing from seeing the magnificent Dexys show at Shepherd's Bush Empire on Tuesday, we've decided to make this Great Big Kiss podcast a partial Dexys tribute, featuring three songs that the band covered in the 80s. Opener, "Breaking Down The Walls Of Heartache", was covered on the b-side of "Geno"; their version of "The Horse" graced the b-side of "There There My Dear"; and "Seven Days Too Long" was covered on "Searching For The Young Soul Rebels". Elsewhere, there's the usual mixture of northern soul, girl groups and r&b, with a raucous party tune from Link Wray thrown in to stir things up. HDIF Podcast #16 - 25/6/12 Listen here - http://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/hdif-podcast-16/ This month's podcast is a collection of songs that formed the staple of the HDIF playlist while we were at the Buffalo Bar, from 2002-2005. Some of these songs still get an airing at the club today, while others haven't made it onto the playlist for many years. We'll be playing every one of these songs when we return to the Buffalo Bar this Friday, for a one-off HDIF at the place where it all started for us. Great Big Kiss Podcast #10 - 14/9/12 Listen here - http://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/great-big-kiss-podcast-10/ Another mixture of northern soul, girl groups, Motown and rock'n'roll, this time pulling together the pick of my vinyl purchases over the last three months. HDIF Podcast #17 - 20/9/12 Listen here - http://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/hdif-podcast-17/ A super bumper crop of new music on this all-indie podcast, featuring songs that were released this year or last and a few songs that are yet to be released. There's brilliant Scandinavians (in the form of Making Marks and Paperfangs), cool Americans (Cassolette, The Holiday Crowd, Ski Lodge and Ringo Deathstarr), bands from Scotland (The Spook School), Wales (Joanna Gruesome), Ireland (September Girls), the south west of England (Big Wave and The Black Tambourines), the north (Martha and The Hobbes Fanclub), the Midlands (themakingof), the east (Violet Woods), and London (Cosines and Flowers), plus a brand new song to wrap up the podcast by the recently reformed June Brides (the west via London, in case you were wondering). So a tour through the here and now with a few nods to then and all eyes to the future. If you were wondering how indiepop's faring in 2012, here's a good place to start! HDIF Podcast #18 - 29/10/12 Listen here - http://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/hdif-podcast-18/ To coincide with this Friday's C86 Special at the Canterbury Arms in Brixton, this month's podcast is packed full of C86 era classics, from the feedback drenched pop of My Bloody Valentine and The Shop Assistants, to the pristine jangle of The Brilliant Corners and The Chesterfields, to the raucous unpop of Bogshed and Half Man Half Biscuit. HDIF Podcast #19 - 4/1/13 Listen here - http://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/hdif-podcast-19/ An all-indiepop podcast to kick off the year, featuring brand new, as-yet-unreleased songs by Tullycraft, Veronica Falls, Owl And Mouse, The Blanche Hudson Weekend, Haiku Salut, Paperfangs and Milky Wimpshake. Plus some of the songs that lit up last year, including the welcome return of The Wolfhounds, the stunning Hospitality (who put out my favourite album of 2012), and the brilliant Spook School, not to mention Allo Darlin', The Understudies, Shrag, The Puncture Repair Kit and Victoria And Jacob. Oh, and two old songs just to mix things up a little. The sublime krautpop of Prolapse from 1997, and a radio session track from 1993 by International Velvet, who were Jeff Fuccillo and Stuart Murdoch, later of Belle & Sebastian. HDIF Podcast #20 - 12/3/13 Listen here - http://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/hdif-podcast-20/ A nice variety of stuff for this podcast - songs we've played at the club over the last few months, songs we planned to play but didn't for some reason, and songs we hope to play at the next club on Saturday night. The next HDIF is a Camera Obscura special so we kick off with a song from their debut album, and then take in indiepop, northern soul, folk rock, garage rock, France Gall singing "Music To Watch Girls By" in German, and our favourite song by the soon-to-be-disbanded Shrag, who play their final show in London on Friday. HDIF Podcast #21 - 15/4/13 Listen here - http://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/hdif-podcast-21/ Tons of fantastic new music in this podcast, with unreleased tracks from Camera Obscura, Darren Hayman (one with Elizabeth Morris of Allo Darlin' on vocals), The Pastels, The Ballet, Sourpatch, Saturday Looks Good To Me, The Understudies (with A Little Orchestra) and Joanna Gruesome, and recently released gems by Golden Grrls, Edwyn Collins, Low, Tullycraft and Haiku Salut. Plus two songs from newer bands playing this years Indietracks festival: Finnmark! from Leeds, and Bristol's EXPENSIVE, who feature members of The Middle Ones and Arctic Circle. Oh, and a track by the brilliant Shy Nature, so new they're yet to play their debut gig! Great Big Kiss Podcast #11 - 9/5/13 Listen here - http://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/great-big-kiss-podcast-11/ As the last Great Big Kiss podcast was a whole seven months ago, this one's a catch-up of the vinyl we've been playing at the club since last October. There's classic northern soul, storming rhythm'n'blues, and some joyous 60s girl group gems. HDIF Podcast #22 - 26/6/13 Listen here - http://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/hdif-podcast-22/ As we're having a sale at HDIF Records this week, I thought it'd be fun to do a podcast spanning the history of the label. We kick off with the first track from our first release, "The Kids At The Club" compilation, and then there's a track from each of our albums, in chronological order, with three more tracks from "The Kids At The Club" peppered in between the songs. HDIF Podcast #23 - 17/7/13 Listen here - http://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/hdif-podcast-23/ A summer podcast for the summertime. A selection of indie pop and soul songs about the summer and songs which make me think of summer even though they're about something else entirely. Great Big Kiss Podcast #12 - 7/8/13 Listen here - http://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/great-big-kiss-podcast-12/ A podcast of some of the vinyl we've picked up over the last few months - a foot-stomping, hand-clapping, hip-shaking mixture of northern soul, Motown, 60s girl groups and 50s R&B. HDIF Podcast #24 - 14/8/13 Listen here - http://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/hdif-podcast-24/ At this Saturday's HDIF at The Phoenix, our guest DJ David Gedge will be playing a DJ set of some of the songs that the Wedding Present have covered over the years. Here's just a selection of the many songs that TWP have reinterpreted in their own inimitable style, ranging from classic indiepop to jagged post punk to soul, sixties pop and the theme tune to a cult TV show. David will be playing some of these on Saturday, plus a few songs that the band have always wanted to cover but never quite got round to. HDIF Podcast #25 - 19/9/13 Listen here - http://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/hdif-podcast-25/ This month's podcast scoots through the highlights of the last few months at HDIF, featuring songs played at the club, songs played at the silent disco at the End Of The Road festival, and records bought at south London's newest vinyl record shop - The Book And Record Bar in West Norwood. Great Big Kiss Podcast #13 - 7/1/13 Listen here - http://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/great-big-kiss-podcast-13/ At every Great Big Kiss, I take a few photos of the records played by the guest DJs, usually as a way of reminding myself of a brilliant song the morning after so I can go hunting for it myself. Here's a compilation of the singles I photographed in 2013. They were played by Debbie Smith, Jon Slade, Lucienne Cole, Bob Stanley, The Actionettes, Gary Day, The Action Men, Kev and Linda, and Declan Allen, although not necessarily in that order. See if you can work out which guest DJ played which song... HDIF Podcast #26 - 14/1/14 Listen here - http://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/hdif-podcast-26/ An all-indie mix to start off the year, rounding up forthcoming releases and a few gems that came out at the tail end of last year. We have unreleased tracks from Darren Hayman and Emma Kupa, Withered Hand, Let's Wrestle, Making Marks, The Wolfhounds, Stanley Brinks and the Wave Pictures, Cocoanut Grove, Dog Legs, T.O.Y.S, City Yelps, Freschard, Boomer and Sodastream's Karl Smith, plus recent releases by The Drink, Hail! The Planes, Heathers, The Mor Paranoids, Evripidis And His Tragedies, Tyrannosaurus Dead, TeenCanteen, and September Girls. HDIF Podcast #27 - 12/4/14 Listen here - http://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/hdif-podcast-27/ A collection of some of the songs played at the most recent HDIFs in Brixton and in central London. There's brand new songs from The Understudies (featuring a mention of HDIF!), Chorusgirl, Heathers and Withered Hand. Old favourites from Comet Gain, The Chills, Jens Lekman and Håkan Hellström. And underplayed gems from Throw That Beat In The Garbagecan and The Delmonas. Plus the usual mixture of northern soul and 60s pop. Great Big Kiss Podcast #19 - 8/12/14 Listen here - http://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/great-big-kiss-podcast-19/ This month, I treated myself to the vinyl box set of singles featured in the Elaine Constantine film, "Northern Soul". There's 14 singles and 28 tracks in all - this podcast is my pick of the bunch, a crisp 42 minute set featuring 16 of the 28 songs. As you might expect, it features classic after classic, from "Right Track" and "Gone With The Wind Is My Love" to "Just Say You're Wanted (nd Needed)" and "Lonely For You Baby". Great Big Kiss Podcast #20 - 2/1/15 Listen here - http://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/great-big-kiss-podcast-20/ A round-up of the vinyl we've bought to play at the club over the last

with some 60s pop thrown in for good measure. feature for Melody Maker. Each band member selected some of their favourite
songs and said a few words about their choices. As a warm up to our
Belle And Sebastian disco in Brixton this Friday (May 1st), I thought
it would be fun to revisit the interview and make a podcast of the band's
selections. Great Big Kiss Podcast #24 - 4/5/15 HDIF Podcast #32 - 11/5/15 HDIF Podcast #33 - 29/5/15 Great Big Kiss Podcast #25 - 7/6/15 Listen here - https://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/great-big-kiss-podcast-33/ A round-up of the vinyl we've bought to play at Great Big Kiss over the last few months. A few of these songs have been on my wish list for years - the fuzzed-up girl group stomp of "You Don't Love Me" by The Starlets and the hand-clapping soul of "Soupy" by Maggie Thrett - so I'm overjoyed to finally have them in my clutches. Elsewhere, you'll find classic northern soul by The Velvet Satins, Jo Armstead, the Ivories and the Fi-Dels, mod dancers courtesy of Georgie Fame and The Harvey Averne Dozen, 50s r&b brilliance by Baby Jean, and all manner of soul goodness to tempt you out onto the dancefloor. HDIF Podcast #34 - 29/2/16 Great Big Kiss Podcast #35 - Northern Soul Top 500 (41-60) - 8/3/16 Listen here - https://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/great-big-kiss-podcast-35-northern-soul-top-500-41-60/ The third in the new series of Great Big Kiss podcasts, in which we make our way through the official Northern Soul Top 500. This time around we glide from 41-60, and this podcast sees the chart start to broaden out stylistically, adding the smoother sounds of modern/crossover northern to the footstomping charms of the classic floorfillers. My picks of the chart are "My Sugar Baby" by Connie Clark, "A Little Bit Hurt" by Julien Covey, "Crackin' Up Over You" by Roy Hamilton, and the brilliant, atmospheric instrumental "Bari Track", which turns even the most humble dancehall into a grand ballroom. Great Big Kiss Podcast #36 - Northern Soul Top 500 (61-80) - 20/3/16 Listen here - https://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/great-big-kiss-podcast-36-northern-soul-top-500-61-80/ I'm on my way! Great Big Kiss Podcast #38 - Northern Soul Top 500 (81-100) - 20/5/16 Listen here - https://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/great-big-kiss-podcast-38-northern-soul-top-500-81-100/ The latest instalment of our journey through the official northern soul top 500 finds us drifting blissfully into an hour of quiet classics. There are no huge, foot-stomping anthems here, but a run of incredible songs that harness a slowburning power to create those soulful dancefloor moments where the real world just seems to melt away. From The Impressions' "You've Been Cheatin'", propelled by the dreamlike falsetto of Curtis Mayfield, to "Run For Cover" by The Dells and "If I Could Only Be Sure" by Nolan Porter, this is northern soul at its purest - sensitive, serious and straight from the heart. HDIF Podcast #35 - The Wave Pictures guest mix - 3/6/16 Listen here - https://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/hdif-podcast-35-the-wave-pictures-guest-mix/ I asked David and Franic of The Wave Pictures for a mix of songs that they've played in their guest DJ sets at HDIF over the years, and they quickly turned in this barn-storming, foot-stomping set of rock'n'roll, rhythm'n'blues, northern soul, garage punk, 70s soul, and loads more. From Ike And Tina Turner and Jerry Lee Lewis to Benny Spellman and The Downliners Sect, via Ann Peebles, The Saints and The Shadows, this mix aims straight for the hips and doesn't let up for a second. Turn it up loud and get on the good foot! Great Big Kiss Podcast #39 - Pitchfork Radio Northern Soul Mix - 4/7/16 Listen here - https://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/great-big-kiss-podcast-38-pitchfork-radio-northern-soul-mix/ On Friday June 10th, Pitchfork Radio landed in London for a two day pop-up broadcast that featured shows by Brian Wilson, The National, Mogwai, The Wedding Present, Raincoats, The Zombies, and many more. I was asked to contribute an hour of classic northern soul, to be broadcast under the title This Is Northern Soul, and this is what I came up with - a foot-stomping run through the greatest hits of Great Big Kiss. The show originally went out on Friday July 10th, from 10am-11am. HDIF Podcast #36 - Dexys special - 10/7/16 Listen here - https://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/hdif-podcast-36-dexys-special/ As a warm up for Kevin Rowland's appearance at HDIF this Saturday, July 16th, here's a podcast of songs that Dexys and Kevin have covered over the years. There's barnstorming soul from Geno Washington, Zoot Money, and Cliff Bennett; solid gold classics from Nina Simone, Van Morrison, Cass Elliot and Sam And Dave; footstomping northern soul from Chuck Wood and Johnny Johnson, and three tracks by Dexys themselves - opening with their current single, a gloriously uplifting take on "Grazing In The Grass". Great Big Kiss Podcast #40 - Northern Soul Top 500 (101-120) - 3/8/16 Listen here - https://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/great-big-kiss-podcast-50-northern-soul-top-500-101-120/ The latest episode in our journey through the official northern soul top 500 takes us into the 100s, and what a hit-packed selection this is. Any set that can run The Spellbinders-Gloria Jones-7th Avenue Aviators-Marie Knight-Edwin Starr-The Valentinos definitely has the wind in its sails, and the classics just keep on coming, from The Poppies and Beverley Ann to Richard Temple and Willie Mitchell. Cancel your plans, crank up the volume, and dance your way into heaven! Great Big Kiss Podcast #41 - 4/9/16 Listen here - https://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/great-big-kiss-podcast-41/ A round-up of the vinyl I've bought to play at Great Big Kiss over the last few months. Kicking off with a 45 I've been after for a couple of years - "Can't You See (You're Losing Me)" by Mary Wells - we glide from irresistible northern soul - "By Yourself" by Jay D Martin, "Jeanette" by Wade Flemons, and "Your Personality" by Jackie Lee - to girl group brilliance - "Love Is The Only Answer" by The Lollipops and "In Your Spare Time" by Cindy Scott - and storming r&b - "I Can't Stand It" by The Soul Sisters and "Can't Chance A Break Up" by Ike & Tina Turner. We round off with two Yardbirds-related songs - "For Your Love" and Brenda Lee's version of "What'd I Say", featuring Jimmy Page - and then raise a cheer for the opening of the night tube, with "Night Train" by James Brown. All aboard!
