HDIF Podcast #39 - Allo Darlin' farewell gig DJ set

Listen here - https://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/hdif-podcast-39-allo-darlin-farewell-gig-dj-set/

A podcast of the songs I played at the final Allo Darlin' gig at the Scala in London on Sunday December 11th. It was a joyous, emotional night, with the band giving the performance of their lives, and I was very lucky to be there. The songs I played all have connections to memories of the last ten years of being friends with Allo Darlin', from the gigs and the club nights to the festivals and more. I have a very happy memory of Paul and Elizabeth playing air piano to My Baby Just Cares For Me at HDIF at The Phoenix, so I definitely wanted that to be in the set. As it turned out, the band walked onto the stage at the very first note of the song. Perfect.

HDIF Podcast #1 - 10/6/10

When I first started doing these podcasts, I thought that you had to talk in between the songs, like a pretend radio show. So the first seven podcasts feature me chatting away about the songs. Luckily, I soon realised I could do all-music, no-chat mixes and I shut my mouth from October 2010 onwards.

Bowlie 2 Mixtape - 19/11/10

Listen here - http://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/bowlie-2-mixtape/

I thought it would be fun to put together a mixtape of some of the bands that are playing at Bowlie 2. We open and close with the curators, Belle & Sebastian (a bonus track from their new album, and then a live song from their set at the original Bowlie festival in 1999), and then take a meander through the best of the rest. Some new songs, some old songs, some you'll know inside out, others you may not have heard before, part primer, part mix to do your hair to on the night before you leave. Hope you enjoy it!

C87 Podcast - 12/1/11

Listen here - http://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/c87/

For this one, I've compiled C87 - my idea of the follow up to C86, released a year later in 1987, the year I moved to London.

The mix features songs I was listening to in 1987, either on record or live (which gets around the fact that the opening song didn't make it onto vinyl until 1988!). They all had a huge impact on me and they're the songs that start playing in my head whenever I think of that year, the first half spent living in Canterbury, playing the Mary Chain and the first Pastels album to death in my bedroom and spending every weekend coming up to London for gigs or to rehearse with my band, the second half actually living in London, sleeping on friends' sofas or floors, and going out to gigs as often as possible.

You'll know most of these songs, but I've also included the single released by my band in that year. It was described by Melody Maker as "the smallest indie single ever released"

(The Razorcuts/Jesse Garon & The Desperadoes/The Jasmine Minks/Talulah Gosh/My Bloody Valentine/The Pastels/Primal Scream/The Primitives/Jesus And Mary Chain/The Clouds/The Soup Dragons/The Meanies/The Chesterfields/The Shop Assistants/We've Got A Fuzzbox And We're Gonna Use It)

(The Primitives/Garnet Mimms/Crystal Stilts/Val McKenna/The Monochrome Set/Alma Cogan/Tigercats/Clarence "Frogman" Henry/The Lovely Eggs/Smokey Robinson And The Miracles/Darren Hayman and The Wave Pictures/The Students/The Farmer's Boys/Donnie Elbert/Comet Gain/Dave Phillips/Owl + Mouse/Louis Armstrong)

Another mixture of stuff for this one. Brand new songs from Standard Fare, Bearsuit, Help Stamp Out Loneliness, Blood Oranges, The Heroes Of The Mexican Independence Movement, Ringo Deathstarr and Bear Response Team. A couple of overlooked indiepop classics from back in the day. Plus some northern soul and r&b stompers played at recent HDIFs and at Great Big Kiss. One song in Italian! All music, no chat.

The usual mixture of new and old, indiepop and soul. Still no talking. Brand new songs from Herman Dune, The Wave Pictures, Comet Gain, The Middle Ones, Hong Kong In The 60s, Soda Shop and Omi Palone. A handful of C86-era favourites from The Dentists, The Corn Dollies and the Mary Chain. Plus some sublime northern soul, handclapping 60s pop, the birth of rock'n'roll, and a spectacularly funky reinvention of "Maggie May".

Great Big Kiss Podcast #5 - 3/6/11

Listen here - http://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/great-big-kiss-podcast-5/

At the start of this week, I won a job lot of fifty northern and 60s soul records on ebay. Some super famous songs, some northern soul classics, some 70s funk cuts, a handful of northern instrumentals and a bunch of songs that I'd been after for ages. This is a collection of 17 of those singles - mostly A-sides, but a few choice B-sides too.

The Songs The Sonics Taught Us - 13/6/11

Listen here - http://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/songs-the-sonics-taught-us/

Released in 1965, The Sonics' debut album, "Here Are The Sonics", contained four originals and eight covers, mostly famous soul and rhythm'n'blues tracks, with a song by local heroes The Wailers thrown in for good measure. But if the source material was well known, the overhaul these songs were given was something else entirely. Recorded on a two track tape recorder, with a single microphone to pick up the drum kit, the songs were souped up and supercharged: rough proto-punk bursts of energy that sounded like they were splattered with oil and gasoline.

Here's the songs The Sonics taught us...

Pulp Alternative Top Ten- 30/6/11

Listen here - http://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/pulp-alternative-top-ten/

As this is the weekend that Pulp make their live return, playing Hyde Park on Sunday, we'll be playing Pulp's Alternative Top Top at HDIF in Brixton on Friday - that is, the cooler songs by Pulp that hardly ever get played out. So no "Common People", no "Babies", but songs like "O.U." and "My Legendary Girlfriend". Votes for the Top Ten have been flying in thick and fast on Facebook. This is a podcast of some of the vote.

Great Big Kiss Podcast #6 - 6/7/11

Listen here - http://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/great-big-kiss-podcast-6/

We start and end this Great Big Kiss podcast with two songs that share the same backing track. Laura Greene's "Music, Moonlight And You" is probably the better known of the two, but my favourite - mostly for the way the melodramatic spoken intro sets up the song - is Frankie And The Classicals' "What Shall I Do?". Elsewhere, we have my favourite ever northern soul single - "Do It" by Pat Powdrill - and "Luci Baines" by The American Four, who were fronted by a youthful, pre-Love, Arthur Lee (in fact, this song was his debut vocal recording). Plus the usual mix of northern soul, girl groups and rock'n'roll.

HDIF Podcast #12 - 17/8/11

Listen here - http://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/hdif-podcast-12/

Loads of amazing new music in this one, with brand new tracks from Allo Darlin', This Many Boyfriends, Jens Lekman, White Town, Pocketbooks, Haiku Salut, Veronica Falls and more, plus the usual mixture of northern soul, girl groups and rock'n'roll.

Great Big Kiss Podcast #7 - 7/9/11

Listen here - http://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/great-big-kiss-podcast-7/

Another foot-stomping mixture of northern soul and rock'n'roll. Highlights include sublime northern soul from Geno Washington, Joyce Bennett and The Velvet Satins, barn-storming r&b from Etta James, Prentice Moreland and Smiley Lewis, the almost indecently sexy Tame Me Tiger by Violet Vector And The Lovelies, Get Off Of My Cloud in Spanish (!), and the song that closed last month's Great Big Kiss, the glorious Be My Guest by Fats Domino.

Great Big Kiss Podcast #8 - 12/10/11

Listen here - http://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/great-big-kiss-podcast-8/

This month's podcast brings together most of the vinyl bits and pieces that I've picked up from boot fairs, record shops and ebay over the past few months, plus some vinyl treats that were already in my collection. Some have already been aired at Great Big Kiss, some will be played for the first time this Friday. As always, it's a foot-stomping, hip-shaking collection of girl groups, northern soul and rock'n'roll.

HDIF Podcast #14 - 16/2/12

Listen here - http://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/hdif-podcast-14/

After a few podcasts packed with new music, we decided to go cover version crazy for this latest episode. If you've ever wanted to hear Hefner playing ska, The Aislers Set throwing a party to a classic Phil Spector production, The Supremes and Chubby Checker taking on the Beatles, and a german beat pop version of a heavy metal classic (oh yes!), then we might just be able to help. .

HDIF Podcast #15 - 13/3/12

Listen here - http://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/hdif-podcast-15/

Another bumper crop of brand new music on this podcast. There's new singles from Veronica Falls and The School, new album tracks from Dexys, The Wedding Present, Cats On Fire and The Just Joans, and brand new songs from the brand new likes of Big Wave, Knickers and Orca Team. Plus the usual foot-stomping mixture of northern soul, girl groups and rock'n'roll.

Great Big Kiss Podcast #9 - 10/5/12

Listen here - http://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/great-big-kiss-podcast-9/

Still buzzing from seeing the magnificent Dexys show at Shepherd's Bush Empire on Tuesday, we've decided to make this Great Big Kiss podcast a partial Dexys tribute, featuring three songs that the band covered in the 80s. Opener, "Breaking Down The Walls Of Heartache", was covered on the b-side of "Geno"; their version of "The Horse" graced the b-side of "There There My Dear"; and "Seven Days Too Long" was covered on "Searching For The Young Soul Rebels". Elsewhere, there's the usual mixture of northern soul, girl groups and r&b, with a raucous party tune from Link Wray thrown in to stir things up.

HDIF Podcast #16 - 25/6/12

Listen here - http://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/hdif-podcast-16/

This month's podcast is a collection of songs that formed the staple of the HDIF playlist while we were at the Buffalo Bar, from 2002-2005. Some of these songs still get an airing at the club today, while others haven't made it onto the playlist for many years. We'll be playing every one of these songs when we return to the Buffalo Bar this Friday, for a one-off HDIF at the place where it all started for us.

So a tour through the here and now with a few nods to then and all eyes to the future. If you were wondering how indiepop's faring in 2012, here's a good place to start!

HDIF Podcast #18 - 29/10/12

To coincide with this Friday's C86 Special at the Canterbury Arms in Brixton, this month's podcast is packed full of C86 era classics, from the feedback drenched pop of My Bloody Valentine and The Shop Assistants, to the pristine jangle of The Brilliant Corners and The Chesterfields, to the raucous unpop of Bogshed and Half Man Half Biscuit.

HDIF Podcast #19 - 4/1/13

Oh, and two old songs just to mix things up a little. The sublime krautpop of Prolapse from 1997, and a radio session track from 1993 by International Velvet, who were Jeff Fuccillo and Stuart Murdoch, later of Belle & Sebastian.

HDIF Podcast #20 - 12/3/13

Listen here - http://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/hdif-podcast-20/

A nice variety of stuff for this podcast - songs we've played at the club over the last few months, songs we planned to play but didn't for some reason, and songs we hope to play at the next club on Saturday night. The next HDIF is a Camera Obscura special so we kick off with a song from their debut album, and then take in indiepop, northern soul, folk rock, garage rock, France Gall singing "Music To Watch Girls By" in German, and our favourite song by the soon-to-be-disbanded Shrag, who play their final show in London on Friday.

HDIF Podcast #22 - 26/6/13

Listen here - http://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/hdif-podcast-22/

As we're having a sale at HDIF Records this week, I thought it'd be fun to do a podcast spanning the history of the label. We kick off with the first track from our first release, "The Kids At The Club" compilation, and then there's a track from each of our albums, in chronological order, with three more tracks from "The Kids At The Club" peppered in between the songs.

Here's just a selection of the many songs that TWP have reinterpreted in their own inimitable style, ranging from classic indiepop to jagged post punk to soul, sixties pop and the theme tune to a cult TV show. David will be playing some of these on Saturday, plus a few songs that the band have always wanted to cover but never quite got round to.

Great Big Kiss Podcast #13 - 7/1/13

Listen here - http://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/great-big-kiss-podcast-13/

At every Great Big Kiss, I take a few photos of the records played by the guest DJs, usually as a way of reminding myself of a brilliant song the morning after so I can go hunting for it myself. Here's a compilation of the singles I photographed in 2013. They were played by Debbie Smith, Jon Slade, Lucienne Cole, Bob Stanley, The Actionettes, Gary Day, The Action Men, Kev and Linda, and Declan Allen, although not necessarily in that order. See if you can work out which guest DJ played which song...

We start and end with both sides of one storming single by Brenda Holloway. To begin, "Just Look What You've Done" (co-written by Frank WIlson and R Dean Taylor - now there's a writing credit!), and to finish up, "Starting The Hurt All Over Again". Not bad for a single 45!

Listen here - https://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/hdif-podcast-31-belle-sebastian-rebellious-jukebox/

In 1997, I interviewed Belle And Sebastian for a Rebellious Jukebox feature for Melody Maker. Each band member selected some of their favourite songs and said a few words about their choices. As a warm up to our Belle And Sebastian disco in Brixton this Friday (May 1st), I thought it would be fun to revisit the interview and make a podcast of the band's selections.

Great Big Kiss Podcast #24 - 4/5/15

Listen here - https://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/great-big-kiss-podcast-24/

I recently asked members of the Northern Soul forum on Facebook to recommend their favourite female vocal soul songs. The response was huge - hundreds of songs tipped, some that I know and love, many that were completely new to me. I'm still working my way through the links, but here's a podcast of my favourites so far. There's everything here, from classic northern soul and sublime girl group harmonies to storming r&b and a couple of songs with a funky spring in their step. My shopping list just got a lot longer, although I was pleased to discover that one of these songs - "What I Don't Know (Won't Hurt Me)" by Bettye Lavette - was lurking on the b-side of a single I own already. I'll be playing that, and hopefully a few more of these songs, at the next Great Big Kiss at The Phoenix.

Elsewhere, there's irresistible northern joy from The Four Tempos, one of my favourite lesser known songs by The Chiffons, some foot-stomping fuzz and attitude from Lulu, and two singles snapped up for 50p apiece at a boot fair in Surrey from a guy who was selling the records he used to play when he was a DJ - "You're Ready Now" by Frankie Valli and "Back In The USA" by Chuck Berry. Nice to think that these well-loved 45s will see more active service at Great Big Kiss!

Happy birthday to us, happy birthday to us! Yes, Great Big Kiss celebrates its sixth birthday this month. Six years of dancing to the finest northern soul, Motown, 60s girl groups and rock'n'roll. Good music, good people, the best of times! And to mark the occasion we're indulging ourselves with a mix of some of our favourite female-fronted soul songs. Many of these make frequent appearances on our playlists, some are old favourites that have languished in the back of our record box for far too long. All are our idea of heaven.

HDIF Podcast #38 - Belle & Sebastian Covers Special

Listen here - https://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/hdif-podcast-38-belle-sebastian-covers-special/

As a warm up for our annual Belle & Sebastian special this Saturday, October 15th, here's a podcast of songs that B&S have covered over the years. The band have a reputation for adding covers to their live shows, many of which have a connection to the place they're playing - I saw them do "What Goes On" in New York, for example - and in the past two decades of touring, they've covered countless songs. Here's 19 of them, ranging from French Pop and indie pop classics to ornate 60s gems and the cooler end of 70s and 80s chart pop. I've also added a song I discovered while researching this podcast - an extremely lo-fi demo of a very early Belle & Sebastian song that I'd never heard before.

Great Big Kiss Podcast #43 - Halloween Mix

Listen here - https://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/great-big-kiss-podcast-43-halloween-mix/

As a warm-up for our annual Halloween dance party in Brixton, here's another mix of spooky soul, ghoulish girl groups and bone-rattling rock'n'roll, awash with voodoo, witchcraft, and all manner of supernatural goings on. Great Big Kiss Podcast #44

We're honoured and excited to have Ady Croasdell as our guest DJ at Great Big Kiss this month. Ady is the head of Kent records and has been responsible for my education in northern soul, R&B, and garage rock, via the peerless Kent compilation albums that he put together over the years. I've still to collect the full set, but there's my pick of the albums that I do own. There's northern soul, 60s girl groups, R&B, mod classics, garage rock and much much more.

Great Big Kiss Podcast #45

Listen here - https://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/great-big-kiss-podcast-45/

At every Great Big Kiss, I take photos of some of the records played by the guest DJs, usually as a way of reminding myself of a brilliant song so I can go hunting for it the next day. Here's a selection of the singles I photographed in 2015 and 2016 at The Phoenix. They were played by Andy Lewis, Ady Croasdell, Lucienne Cole, The Action Men, Gary Day, Kev And Linda, Declan Allen and Les Petits Feet And Agent Badlam.
